Gifts of Stock

Gifts of stock, bonds or mutual shares that have increased in value typically have a greater tax benefit than giving cash.  That’s why appreciated securities are often an advantageous way to make a gift to the Hanley Center.

These gifts mean:

  • A charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted stock or securities
  • Increased value for your gift and decreased cost to you
  • Elimination of capital gains tax that normally applies if you sell the appreciated stock or securities on the open market and donated the proceeds

Please initiate a Gift of Stock by contacting the Hanley Center’s Coordinator of Finance & Administration, which will allow us to properly acknowledge and track your gift to our Schwab brokerage account:

IRA Charitable Rollover -- Permanently Extended!

If you are 70 ½ years old, you can take advantage of a simple way to support the Hanley Center and receive tax benefits in return.

As you plan your required minimum distributions for this year, consider using your IRA account to make the most of your charitable giving.  You receive a tax benefit even if you take the standard deduction!

You can donate up to $100,000 annually.  IRA Charitable transfers are excluded from gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040.  You receive no charitable deduction.  An IRA Charitable Rollover counts toward your required minimum distribution for the year in which you made the gift.

  • The transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator to the Hanley Center.
  • Gifts must be outright. Distributions to donor-advised funds or life-income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities do not qualify.
  • Gifts from SEP, 403b, 401k and other plans do not qualify.

It’s important to consider your tax situation before you decide to make a charitable contribution from your IRA.  Please do share your gift plan with your financial advisor.

Legacy Gifts

Making a legacy gift to the Hanley Center, or a “planned gift”, is a way that you can help ensure our work continues transforming our healthcare delivery system and the health of our citizens for years to come.

The simplest and most common type of legacy gift is a bequest, that you can arrange through a simple clause in your Will or Living Trust, enabling you to retain full ownership and use of your assets during your lifetime.  In most cases, bequests are deductible against federal estate taxes and state inheritance taxes.

Please consult with your attorney, accountant, and/or other advisors for preparation of any addition or changes to your Will or Trust.

We appreciate the thought and planning necessary to make this kind of gift.  Your “forever” gift will help the Hanley Center dependably carry out Dr. Dan’s legacy, positively impacting patient care, far into the future.

Gifts in Tribute or Memory

Honor your living healthcare hero or give in memory of a friend or loved one with a tax-deductible donation to the Hanley Center.

Your thoughtful gift will enable the Hanley Center to continue working towards its vision of a world in which leaders, to strengthen the health of individuals and communities, incorporate the Hanley Center’s values of collaboration, courage, inclusion, innovation, hard work and kindness.

For tribute gifts, we’ll mail your recipient a card letting them know about your generous donation made in their name.
